The land
taught me
first
Growing up wasn't a lesson plan for me. It was real life. Long before sustainability became a buzzword. I was already living it, growing our own food, building our own home, learning to read the land from the two people who shaped me most. My father Manuel Matheus and my godfather Ricardo Gil. Everything I know about the earth, self reliance and craftsmanship traces back to those years. Working with my hands beside the people I loved.
As a teenager that upbringing turned into wanderlust. I travelled through South and Central America and somewhere along the way something clicked. The landscapes, the wild variety of plants, the way nature organizes itself into something more beautiful than anything designed. That trip planted a passion that has never left me, making beauty out of natural materials and lush living gardens.
Today, I live in the Dominican Republic with my family and lead the landscaping team at Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club, part of Discovery Land Company and widely regarded as one of the best golf courses in the Caribbean. The grounds there aren't only manicured, they tell a story. We weave ornamental planting into organic forest across the whole property. With the tropical fruits and vegetables this island gives us planted right into it, so the place feels immersive instead of staged.
My work sits at an interesting intersection, luxury landscapes for world class real estate that still feel grounded, connected and smart about the world around them. High end, without losing its roots. Underneath all of it is a simple hope, that people reconnect with nature and organic farming the way we did as a kid. Because a beautiful landscape isn't just something you look at, it's something you belong to.
